John D’Agostino and Oz Welch have been working together like peanut butter and jelly for quite some time, and their 7th collaboration, splashed across these glossy pages, is one of their best. It’s a ’57 Oldsmobile called the “Golden Star” and was built to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of 1957. The year that rock-n-roll was pure, platinum blonde starlets were red hot, and fast and beautiful cars were spilling from the factories of Detroit in a zenith of imagination and wonder. This car was built to capture the zoomie “concept car” feel. If these pictures were in black and white, you’d be hard pressed to tell if they were taken in 1957 or 2007. That’s the point of a great kustom, to be timeless.
As with most of John’s cars, this one started with a clean base. Some people may ride him for cutting up classics, but he’s in this to customize, not restore, and a clean palette is always a better start. This one was a 67K original mile red and white California cream puff purchased from car collector Mike Ahl in June of 2005. A scant two years later it made its debut at the 2007 San Francisco Rod & Custom show.
