FAMOSO SPEED SHOP GASSER

Randy Winkle says that his first exposure to a gasser-styled car came at a truck stop during a family trip when he was a kid. It was a red straight-axled ’58 or 9 Corvette with skinny five spokes and big slicks. He was so moved that when he got home he bought a Corvette model car, painted the body red, and put it on his slot car chassis with pen springs so it would ride way up in the air. Adding inspiration, at the tender age of 10 he was exposed to street racing first hand with Racer Brown in a 427-powered Sedan Delivery. He was given a Coors tall-boy, a beanbag, and the instructions to “hold on.” He hasn’t looked back ever since.

These days he spends his free time racing a Chevy-powered front-engined rail with his son, Randy Winkle Jr. in the NE1 and NE2 classes, banging out 7 second passes at will. At any given moment there are several project cars going on at this shop just down the street from the legendary Famoso raceway in Bakersfield, California.
